The Vera Institute of Justice is committed to creating a dynamic, supportive work atmosphere that fosters personal and professional development and celebrates individual diversity.
Vera’s staff of more than 150 people come from a variety of backgrounds, including anthropology, carpentry, criminology, finance, fine arts, law, public policy, and religion. Some are former commissioners and state department officials. Others have served as probation officers and provided direct services. Some staff have even found time to become published authors and accomplished athletes.
Vera’s main office is located in the historic Woolworth Building in downtown Manhattan, across from City Hall. We have additional offices in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, as well as satellite offices in Washington, DC, New Orleans, Los Angeles, and elsewhere.
Vera seeks to create a collegial and relaxed, yet intellectually stimulating work environment. Monthly institute-wide meetings provide opportunities for staff to share knowledge about new or current projects. There are also regular forums designed to stimulate creative thinking about how the institute can improve the services it provides.
Vera supports informal activities as well, including restaurant outings, staff cooking contests, and after work social hours. It also offers gym membership reimbursements and supports staff initiatives, such as weekly yoga classes.
Opportunities for Professional Development
Vera creates several opportunities for staff to build their skills, including trainings in management and meeting facilitation and biweekly sessions on developing public speaking skills. For staff who choose to continue their education, Vera reimburses a portion of their tuition fees.
Commitment to Diversity
Vera honors its staff members’ diverse points of view and is committed to fostering a culture that supports these perspectives. This diversity yields an array of knowledge and expertise that enhances the institute’s work and makes it meaningful to a diverse audience, including government officials, policy makers, advocates, and academics.
At Vera, we are always working to improve the systems people rely on for justice and safety. There are many contributions yet to make. To learn about work opportunities at Vera, visit Vera’s career page.
